Hello...it's me

To quote Adele...

"Hello, it's me... I was wandering if after all these (months) you like to meet to go over everything.  They say that time's supposed to heal ya. But I ain't done much healing...Hello, how are you?  It's so typical of me to talk about myself... I am sorry...I hope you are well."

"Hello blog, it's me"...The months just seem to keep slipping by and I haven't taken the time to write my thoughts, feelings or impressions.  I will admit that a lot has been going on, school, family, and some major health issues, but that is no excuse for leaving my blog unused.   I am sure that if I would blog a little more I would have the outlet I need to express myself in words, thoughts and photos and hat would make me more aware of the blessings in my life.

Healing our hearts, minds and physical bodies requires work, introspection, forgiveness and a whole lot of patience.  I was told recently by a trusted friend that I should learn to meditate so that I could embrace my weakness and vulnerabilities so that they could become a sense of strength in my life.  My immediate response to that was ..."Ain't nobody got time for dat", hence the reason this person probable thought it might be a good idea.  Blogging to me is a form of self meditation as I have to slow down and think about what is in my mind and heart and then find the correct words to use to describe my thoughts and feelings.

So here is to my self prescribed blogging meditation...let the healing begin.

Life in Black and White

One of the things that has really brought me so much joy and happiness over the last eight years is taking photo of the things that I "feel". That is different then the things that I see.  What I try to achieve is to capture my emotions or feelings of the experience that I am having at the time.  So when I look back at my photos I connect again with the experience through the feelings that I tried to capture.   I was reading about black and white photography and found this quote by Ted Grant which sums up how I feel about my black & white canvas...

"When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!”

Here are some of my favorites "emotions" taken in USA, Thailand, China, Myanmar, India and Austria

Thailand to Rexburg with a little HISTORY In-between

With only 8,500 miles separating me from the BYU-Idaho campus I was able to start classes again on September 14th.  Each day I get the opportunity to wake up and go to school, via the online degree program!
I love to sign in and get stated with my days assignments.  Going back to school hasn't been easy... because it had been so long since my college days, I was asked to take Math 100B and Math 108 before I could take course for my degree. Both of those classes gave me a run for my MONEY!  I literally can't believe that I paid to take math classes which are not my favorites - but I happily complied and nail it with A's in both of them. That was last year and this year I get to actually take classes that will help me earn a degree in family history.  With 8500 miles between Thailand and Rexburg I still can go to school.

I am only taking 2 classes and that leaves me with enough time to travel, play and work on my own family history.  Currently, I am transcribing my journals from 1978-1980.  WOW they are pretty interesting and I find that I am deleting things while also adding qualifying information!  Ron actually did the transcribing and I admit I was a little embarrassed about the things that I wrote about and the feelings that I had.  Ron loved reading and typing it, he said "Heidi, you are the same person today as you were back then. You love with your whole heart, you care about people, you want to do good and you love the Lord."  I hope there is some truth to that - I read it and see a young silly college girl who seems to only want to be loved and accepted.
The project is part of a school assignment that is due in a few weeks and it has been an emotional review of my life as a eighteen year old girl.  Memories and emotions are flooding back, some of them are wonderful, some of them are really quite funny and some of them are hurtful, sad and lonely.  History is simply an account of facts from the past - and yet when you call it family history or personal history then it becomes an emotional look down memory lane.  It has taken me a couple weeks to comes to terms with who I was back then and some of the things that I wrote - but it was my life, it was how I felt and it was life experiences that have created who I am today.

I like how Ron said that I was the same person that I always have been - giving, loving and desiring to be accepted and loved by friends.  Nothing wrong with that, in fact my favorite author Jane Austen once wrote...

I too have no notion of loving people by halves - it is not in my nature either!
And my personal history reflects that!

BKK Biking is always and Adventure!

One of the things that I love about living in Thailand is biking.  And it is even better when a good friend comes to visit and we get to go riding three days in a row!  Carrie is living in Taiwan and popped on over for a quick visit and some fun.

Thanks Carrie for the wonderful video - you captured my Thailand !

Balinese Beauty

This past May Ron and I had the opportunity to visit Bali for our third time, each time has been an unique experience.  This visit we were able to view the Pura Luhur Temple.

The Pura Luhur Lempuyang is one of Bali's nine main temples and is of great significance for the Balinese culture and religion. So you will often see Balinese families of the island, visiting in full ceremonial attire and bring food over their heads with balancing large baskets. This with the aim to get the blessings of the priest in the temple at the top of the hill.

It's not so easy to reach the place of the temple, because it is known that you have to climb 1700 steps to reach the temple. Some call this temple "The Temple of 1000 steps". To visit the temple you have to pull out for about 2 hours.
Once you manage to come up, you will not regret all the efforts, because the temple is really nice and it has a great variety of interesting values of the Hindu religion.
The entire temple complex consists of seven temples of which the highest is at 1,058 meters high. For the visitors of the temple complex it is compulsory to wear a sarong. Down the hill you will find: the Pura Agung Lempuyang Tara Pena. This is the most beautiful temple to see.

Not only will you enjoy the impressive architecture and unusual traditions related to the Hindu religion, which you see. However, because the temple is so high above sea level, you can enjoy a beautiful sunrise coming up over the mountains and the sea. Therefore, the best time to visit the temple early in the morning. Due to the higher location is during the day and mostly cloudy in the afternoon.

I am so grateful for all the beautiful places that I have been able to visit while living in Asia the past seven years. It has been a time of much learning and growth for me. I have come to appreciate the wonders of the world and have learned to love the rich heritage of the countries that I have visited.  I have been blessed.

The Balinese culture and people are beautiful and they find joy in the simple things of life.  As Hindus their belief system differs from mine and yet there are so many things that are the same.  Be nice, be kind and be grateful are the real Balinese beauties.

Love Languages

As part of my course work for a university class that I am currently taking we had to study and apply the concepts from Gary Chapman's book The 5 Love Languages for the last two weeks.  I had studied them before and have been using them in my own life and it was a great reminder that all of us need LOVE.    Some might think that the whole idea of love language is just a foolish idea and a great waste of time.   As for me I believe that everyone has a love language, it is the way we most feel love.  Every one of us is born with the need to be loved.  If the love comes in a different way then the way we receive it we might not feel it, notice it or even appreciate it.  Of the many things written in The Family: A Proclamation to the World the over all message is LOVE.  It shows us Gods love for His children by providing them a plan that is filled with His love.  “God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten son.” We have been commanded to learn to love as Christ loves us.  He knows our individual love language and each of us can feel His divine love because He has learned how each of us feel and receive His love.

In the proclamation it states, “Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and their children...teach them to love and serve one another...Successful marriages are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, LOVE....” We also know that each of us is an unique individual with gifts and talents all our own.  So it stands to reason that each one of us would receive and give love in a way that is part of us.  If we are to truly learn to love others as Christ loves us we much learn how another receives love. Call it a language or what ever you want but each of us needs to understand the way others receive love so that we might give and show them love the same as the Savior does for us.  To me it seems selfish of a person to only give love the way they expect to receive it and not learn how their spouse or children receive it.   It is my belief that learning to give another love in their “language” might be hard, uncomfortable and awkward and yet it is in the learning and in the sacrifice of putting ourselves in another viewpoint that the Lord shows us His love, understanding and mercy.

I already knew what my love language was before the start of this project, but I took the test again just to see if things had changed.  My results were both no and yes.  I scored a 12, the highest in a category, for my main love language; Words of Affirmation.  My second and third languages were switched this time, maybe do to age or sheer exhaustion of raising a family for the last 32 years.  My second language is now Quality Time followed by Physical Touch.  For the project I needed to have my husband and children take the test, and I guessed each one correctly including their spouses.  I think it was because I have tried over the last several years to watch, listen, and be aware of how each one received loved.  Relationships are very important to me, and some of that is due to the fact that I love half way around the world from families and friends that I love dearly.  Money cannot buy love or relationships they take hard work, sacrifice and a willingness to listen and learn.

I belive that my live is richer, fuller and has more meaning when I give love to others the way that they receive it.  I feel closer to the Lord when trying to share my love and in turn He shares His divine love with me.

Something's a"foot"

Growing old has its benefits but it also has some negatives and lately it seems I have had my fair share.  Over the past few days I have become increasing thankful for my feet! They are a wonderful part of our amazing physical bodies and they get little or no attention.  Actually most people prefer not to talk about, see or feel feet and that is perfectly understandable.  They carry a persons weight around all day, they look funny, they are ticklish, and they can smell pretty bad!! Feet work long hard hours and rarely if ever get pampered, unless one lives in Thailand like I do. But most of the population taking care of ones feet is the last thing on their “to do” list.

Did you know that your foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, more than 100 tendons, muscles, and ligaments, and a whopping 250,000 sweat glands? Here is another random fact: the 14 bones of the toes are among the smallest in the human body!

Okay now for those TOES...they do two very important things for us. Firstly, the toes, especially the big toe, help us balance. To test this, try standing on one foot with none of your toes touching the ground. After a while, relax your toes and let them touch the ground again. I'll bet balancing on one foot is a lot easier using your toes!
The second thing toes do for us is to help propel us forward while we are walking or running. The toes give that last little push off. (If you've ever walked in ski boots you know how difficult it is to go very fast when your toes can't bend at the end of your step.) Okay now I know why I couldn’t run in my ski boots – the one and only time I hit the slopes!
So why talk about feet and toes.  Well because I am grateful for what they can do.  It has been four days since I had surgery on my right foot.  My doctors had to removed my swollen and enlarged bursa sack, shave off a bunionette and had to break my 5th metatarsal and realign it a screw to my baby toe!  And now I am off my foot for 6 weeks.  Literally, I have to stay off my foot, no weight bearing on it at all.  I have a set of crutches upstairs; a walker (like what older people use to walk) downstairs and today I resorted to sitting in a rolling office desk chair to get around faster!! Going for a walk, a run or a hike is totally out of the question...heck I can’t even swim right now.   So my mind and body are frustrated and I am learning to be profoundly grateful for my FEET!
