My Summer Home

Welcome to my Summer home, you are invited to visit me anytime - if you can "catch" me at home!

The house is small but has enough windows to let a lot of SUN in.  The kitchen is lacking a few things, the igloo refrigerator is small but works. The cool thing about this house is it has a surround stereo system that works great - even if I have the windows open.  It has wall to wall carpet that is a nice beige color, it will need to be cleaned soon but is wearing very well in the high traffic areas.  It has a mirror but no real bathroom facilities so you will have to go before your visit!  Cooking is difficult, so we tend to go for "FAST' food.  If you have time in your busy summer, we would love to see you!

Growing Pains

I have been experiencing some growing pains lately. Although I have been done growing physically for about 30 years, I continue to grow emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually.  So, the growing pains that I have been experience have nothing to do with my physical tabernacle. In fact over the last year my physically tabernacle has been getting smaller , having actually lost some "CHEMO" weight that has been hanging on to me since 2001.

Today I was thinking of how much I have grown in the last ten years.  Cancer really changed my life - how I live, how I think and what is important.  Now, lest you think that all of the growing was easy and came naturally, it did not.  As I look at my life I see that when I grew the most during some of the most difficult times of my life.  Right now I am having growing pains again, my arms are being stretched from Thailand to the Pacific Northwest!  How do I give Austin a hug via SKYPE?  How do I smell that Austin smell, you know the good baby smell not the "what did you do Austin?"  smell, across the great waters of the Pacific Ocean?  Last I checked  skype is not a "smellyavision".  When I saw Austin last Friday night I couldn't believe how much he had grown in a week!  What will a year bring?  Growing pains are being felt and I am trying to work through them.

I do not believe in evolution like Mr. Darwin - but I have come to believe in the some of the "fittest survive" or another way Darwin said it was "better adapted for immediate, local environment"!  I have to say that in the last 10 months living in Asia I have learned to adapt to my local environment...so much so that today when I picked up the "Walker Boys", John's friends from Hong Kong, I was transported back to Asia for a second, while I was driving.  I turned on to a street and began driving on the left side of the road!  What a Hong Kong moment that was - I realized that I had adapted to my Asian environment just by looking and seeing those young men again!  Thankfully no cars were driving on that downtown SLC street - it was after all Sunday morning and things were a little quiet!  Growing pains could have been a real PAIN!

I would be telling a white lie if I said that I have never really felt any physical pains from all this growing.  Not to long ago I said goodbye to a friend, and my head and heart ached for days.  It amazes me how emotional and mental pains can cause very real physical pain.  I learned this the hard way.

I would also be telling a lie if I let you think for one minute that growing older doesn't cause any pain, it does both physical and emotional.  Physically my body can't do what I want it to do which then brings on the emotional pain of realizing that I am not 25 any longer -but pushing double that!  Mentally I feel like I am in my twenties while physically I am going to be FIFTY!  Talk about some growing pains!

I would like to close with a quote from Mary Tyler Moore,

"Take chances, make mistakes. That's how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.”

So I am going to do some more growing and I know it will involve some pain but I am determined to "practice being brave" by taking chances and learning from my mistakes and by realizing that growing pains are helping me be the very best ME!!

Learning to Spit!

Yesterday John and I made out way down to Oregon, to see Austin and his parents.  Today we drove to Rexburg, Idaho to see Laura, Mandy and David!  Now here is the thing, I have to do all the driving and it is a pretty boring drive.  The scenery in the Blue Mountains doesn't change much, neither do the cows standing in the fields or the construction work on I84!  John is not a good co-pilot,  he likes to sleep and talking sometimes is a chore for him. Now don't get me wrong he is a great traveling companion for a 15 year old boy - but really he is not Audrey or Laura!

So I have had to resort to eating sunflower seeds to stay awake!  My personal favorites are the chile-lime variety - but the cracked pepper ones are good too.  Much to my dismay I have learned that I have a feature that I didn't know had until this trip - I can't spit!  John can crack the seeds in this mouth, eat the kernel and then spit the shell nicely into a paper cup.  I watched him over and over and I am just seed-spitting inept.  John tried hard to teach me but I am just couldn't get the hang of it.  I have to say that it would be nice for my fingers if I could get the spitting talent  down - after awhile the salt makes them numb!

I am sure that I will have time to practice the spitting techniques that John is trying to teach me we still have to drive to Provo, Lindon, Logan and back to Washington after David and Mandy's wedding.  I hope to try my luck on the Jalapeno flavored seeds, they might give me an incentive not to use my fingers.   Soon I will be 50 years old and it would be sad if I never learned to spit correctly.  I have heard that learning new things helps one to avoid the pitfalls of Alzheimer's, this will really stretch my talents but I am determined to Learn to Spit like the PRO's!

"NOT" Why

While living in Hong Kong one of the difficulties that we all faced was asking a small but important question, WHY...?  Inevitably the answer was... "NOT WHY".  In other words we are told... don't ask why!  Since I am not in Hong Kong right now I would like to ask ...WHY?

  1. Why do all my children think it is okay to slug their mom when we pass a Volkswagen bug?
  2. Why do I feel the need to run everyday - after all I am reaching half a century soon shouldn't I be resting?
  3. Why is SUN so important to me?  Am I lacking in vitamin "D"?
  4. Why am I so busy doing nothing?
  5. Why is it that I am able to see the "FOREST" through the "TREES"?
  6. Why is it that I like to smell like a fruit or spice?  Thanks to Bath and Body Works.
  7. Why is it that I can feel lost and lonely in a group?
  8. Why do I wish I could apperate?  Thank you Harry Potter.
  9. Why can eat at Chipoltes at least once a week?  Okay twice a week!
  10. Why am I even asking why? Heidi, just stop asking why and accept things as they are!
That is enough for today and I feel better asking why - even if no one answers my questions!  My brain feels so much lighter having asked those questions - WHY IS THAT?

Sights, Sounds and Smells

Sights, Sounds and Smell... of MY Summer

SIGHTS...
One of my favorite things to see in the summer is the blooming of digitalis purpurea, or more commonly known as foxglove...

These remind me of spending my summers at our family cabin on Whidbey Island.  The flowers color range from purple to white and everything in between.  I loved to see these in bloom against the green of the trees and ferns.  It is one of those signs that summer is here!

SOUNDS...

The first thing that come to mind as a sound of summer is the music coming from the "Popsicle" vendor.  I saw the familiar van just the other day - I have to say that the music has changed and the price has gone up, I am not sure that even I can afford one anymore but the sounds bring back childhood summer memories.

SMELLS...

I was running the other night and smelled a familiar childhood smell, blackberry flowers or Rubus armeniacus blooms.  The smell put a smile on my face and gave me that little boost I need to finish my run.  For me memories are made and remembered by smells, so when I was running and the scent of the blackberry bloom drifted to my nose I immediately went back to my summers as a child, picking them and then making pies for my dad.  To this day fresh blackberry pie is one of my favorites.

One of the others smells is Coppertone tanning lotion - I love that smell - it reminds me of being on Whidbey Island, sitting in a small dingy rowboat by myself reading Pride and Prejudice and feeling the SUN on my back as I drifted with the waves while Miss Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy were running across the pages of my book.

There are so many sights, sounds and smells of summer that have kept alive memories in my mind and heart.  So what are some of your favorite sights, sounds and smells of summer?

Fifteen

Today John, the BABY, turned fifteen.  Where has the time gone, he changes so fast...

Laura and John (2008)                                   John and Audrey (2010)

John is a wonderful son, he has become my constant companion over the last year.  We have shared some very special moments and some not so special ones.  But through it all we have grown to not only love each other as Mother and Son, but also as friend to friend.  He is an example of all things good in this world and he gives me the hope for the future.  Stand tall John and never forget for whom you were named after.  May the next few years be filled with wholesome and productive experiences and may I live long enough to see you fulfill all your dreams.

The best part of camping is our tradition of making Dough Boys for breakfast one of the mornings.  This year I out did myself...

Just the right amount of heat from the coals to make the Dough Boy the lovely golden color,

and then off the stick and stuff with Fresh Homemade Raspberry Jam

then the First BITE is followed by Second and so on and so on....
